"Terrence Loves You" (originally titled "Jazz N Blues" and "Violet Sings The Blues") is a song by Lana Del Rey and co-written by Rick Nowels that is featured as the third track on Del Rey's third major-label full-length album Honeymoon. The song was officially released worldwide on August 21, 2015, as the first promotional single from the record.

Background and release

The song was written and recorded in 2015. The title of the track was shared by Del Rey on August 18, 2015, in response to paparazzi asking about her favorite song off the album. Del Rey replied "Terrence Loves You" and when asked why, she explained, "it's jazzy".

Del Rey also stated that this track and "God Knows I Tried" are very close to her heart.

The song was officially released worldwide on August 21, 2015, as the first promotional single from Honeymoon, the same day that the album went up for pre-order. The official single cover surfaced on Shazam on the 20th of August.

An early version of the song produced by Mark Ronson has been confirmed by himself via Reddit. It currently remains unleaked.

Critical reception and composition

Rolling Stone praised the song for Del Rey's vocal performance, and called the track "hypnotic", with Del Rey singing over piano, strings, and a "moaning" saxophone. The song contains an interpolation of the song "Space Oddity" by English singer-songwriter David Bowie from his eponymous second studio album. The song opens with isolated guitar notes plucked and dropped, before moving into the distance as piano chords appear, followed by violins, and, Del Rey's vocals. The chorus is delivered in an operatic style and lyrically talks about strength in the face of abandonment. Throughout the chorus, there are brief saxophone sections inserted and David Bowie references with lyrics such as "Ground control to Major Tom, can you hear me all night long?".

Live performances

Del Rey performed the song live on September 15, 2015, at Maida Vale Studios in London, United Kingdom, for a live BBC Radio 1 session and interview. The session was aired on September 22. On February 2, 2018, Del Rey briefly sang the song a cappella at a fan's request in Orlando, Florida at the LA to the Moon Tour. She performed a shortened version of the song, excluding the second verse and chorus, on the last two dates of the LA to the Moon Tour on April 19 and April 20, 2018, in Barcelona and Madrid respectively.
